BackGod Of War Laufey Reveal: Release Date, Gods, Myths, Cast etc.

God Of War Laufey Reveal: Release Date, Gods, Myths, Cast etc.

Published 6/3/2026, 12:05:32 PM | Updated 6/3/2026, 1:01:02 PM

One of the biggest surprises from that June 2026 PlayStation State of Play reveal, was the official unveiling of God of War Laufey, the next mainline chapter coming out of Santa Monica Studio’s legendary action-adventure saga.

Up until now, for almost 2 decades, the God of War series mostly kept circling around Kratos. But this time PlayStation is steering the whole thing into a different lane, by putting Laufey, also called Faye, right at the heart of the story. And yeah, it feels like a shift, not just a small detour.

Faye is known as Kratos’ wife, the mother of Atreus, and one of the more mysterious presences in the Norse tale. For most of the series, she’s been more of a fable that haunts the background, rather than a person you actually see doing things. God of War Laufey finally flips that idea, digging into her unwritten path, her ties to the Giants, and a brand-new mythic location called The Everywhen.

Since it showed up, God of War Laufey basically got everywhere, becoming one of the most argued about announcements of Summer Game Fest week and also one of PlayStation’s most watched upcoming exclusives.

Here is everything we know so far, with what seems solid and what still feels a bit guessy.

God Of War Laufey Release Date

As of right now, Santa Monica Studio still has not shared a concrete official release date for God of War Laufey.

That said, based on industry chatter and Sony’s pattern for reveals, many analysts are expecting a launch sometime in :

📅 2027

It looks like the project is fairly far along, especially since State of Play already included a decent chunk of gameplay footage, not just a short tease. On top of that, PlayStation has put up an official wishlist page, which usually means marketing momentum is starting to build, even if the final calendar is still hiding.

So for the next wave of details, a lot of fans are pointing at future appearances at:

  • Future PlayStation showcases,
  • Summer Game Fest coverage,
  • The Game Awards,
  • and maybe even dedicated God of War presentations

Until Sony confirms something official, 2027 is still the most believable launch window, even if nothing is locked in yet.

God Of War Official Trailer

PlayStation has dropped official God of War Trailer-

What Is God Of War Laufey About?

So basically, unlike the earlier games that pretty much zoomed in on Kratos, God of War Laufey kind of, centers fully on Faye instead (not even a little about anyone else at first).

The whole story kicks off after she dies.

And according to Santa Monica Studio:

Death was supposed to be the end, but for Laufey a new adventure is only beginning.

Faye wakes up, kind of out of nowhere, after her funeral, in this strange place called:

The Everywhen

It’s like a supernatural afterlife, but it exists beyond the usual realms players already dealt with before.

And yeah, her goal is pretty clear: to get back home and protect her family, Faye has to push through this dangerous world while also piecing together what’s really going on with death, magic, and the gods.

What Is The Everywhen?

One of the most interesting new ideas introduced in God of War Laufey is the Everywhen.

It’s described as:

✨ The birthplace and final destination of all magic.

Unlike the older God of War worlds that were mostly tied to Greek or Norse mythology, the Everywhen seems to sit outside the normal myth boundaries.

It’s basically a crossroads, where Gods creatures spirits, mythological beings from different cultures and stories can exist together

…though, “together” isn’t really peaceful.

Throughout the game, players will run into powerful gods, nasty monsters, and ancient things, all fighting to control this magic realm, so it’s not exactly chill, you know.

Which Gods show up in God of War Laufey?

That reveal trailer basically confirmed that God of War Laufey is going beyond just Norse mythology, which was kinda the whole vibe for the series before.

Two new gods were officially shown:

Sekhmet

That lion-headed warrior goddess from Egyptian tradition, and yeah she looks like she means business.

She’s often tied to:

  • Goddess of war
  • Destruction
  • Protection

Sekhmet seems like she’ll be a big deal too, possibly one of Faye’s main adversaries, or at least she’s positioned that way in the story atmosphere.

Begtse

This one’s inspired by Mongolian mythology.

Details are still kinda thin, but the reveal implies Begtse will also act as a heavy enemy inside the Everywhen, like a presence that’s not just background noise.

So overall these additions suggest God of War Laufey may start widening the franchise beyond Norse mythology, maybe in order to set up what comes next for future games

Is God of War Laufey a Prequel?

Technically, yes and no.

The game looks at events involving Faye earlier than the Norse saga ever starts, but the actual story is set after her death.

So instead of being a straight-up prequel that just tells “what happened before”, God of War Laufey feels more like

A parallel tale, showing events we never saw

This lets Santa Monica Studio

  • Build out Faye’s past even further
  • Explore other mythologies besides Norse
  • Keep moving the franchise forward without depending only on Kratos

God Of War Laufey Gameplay

The biggest surprise from the reveal, was kind of the gameplay itself, not the story beats or the big reveals first, you know? It still keeps the core God of War DNA, but Faye’s style feels noticeably different from Kratos’. Like, in a more quick , sharper way.

Faster And More Agile Combat

Kratos usually leans on things like:

  • Heavy strikes
  • Raw strength
  • Brutal end-of-fight finishers

But Faye instead seems to go for:

  • Speed
  • Precision
  • Fluid motion
  • Air-based combat

In the footage you can see a lot of:

  1. Rapid attacks
  2. Aerial sequences
  3. Agile evasions
  4. Magical abilities

A bunch of fans already compared it to a mix of:

  1. Classic Greek-era God of War
  2. Modern Norse God of War
  3. Character action games
  4. And maybe, The Legendary Sword kinda vibe

The Legendary Sword

One of Faye’s primary weapons is a strong magical sword.

And yeah, it’s not like Kratos’ Leviathan Axe or the Blades of Chaos, this one is more about:

⚔️ Speed and momentum

The whole flow is basically built around chaining hits, while never really stopping the movement. It feels like instead of “stand and smash”, it’s more like “keep slipping forward, then strike again”.

The weapon lets her do things such as:

  • Ground combo strings
  • Air juggling
  • Mobility driven fighting
  • High-speed finishing hits

Soul Manipulation Powers

As for the legend, Faye is tied to the Golden Hand of the Jötnar, so she has exceptional arcane abilities.

One of the most unique mechanics shown involves

🟡 Soul Manipulation

Faye can:

  1. Pull souls out of enemies
  2. Strike the detached souls directly
  3. Toss those souls into other foes
  4. Set up brutal combo openings

Honestly this soul thing looks like it’s central to, not just fighting but also puzzle solving too.

Who Is Laufey (Faye)?

Long-time God of War fans know Faye as:

  • Kratos’ wife,
  • Atreus’ mother ,
  • and the Guardian of the Giants

But yeah, the games before this revealed very little about her, like almost nothing that really sticks.

God of War Laufey finally puts her right there, center stage.

Santa Monica Studio describes her as:

The Golden Hand of the Jötnar

A legendary warrior, strong enough to go up against even Thor himself.

And the game basically digs into her:
strengths, flaws, relationships, and that hidden legacy nobody noticed.

So it gives players a chance to really understand one of the most important people in the franchise.

God Of War Laufey Cast

Santa Monica Studio has already confirmed a few big names.

Deborah Ann Woll as Faye

Deborah Ann Woll comes back reprising her role from God of War Ragnarök.
This time she’s the lead protagonist for the newest chapter, which is a big deal.

Jack Quaid as Phranque

One of Faye’s companions.

Phranque is described as:
a cosmic cube, a loyal friend, and this curious explorer vibe.

His personality seems like it keeps things lighter too, offering humor and emotional support during the trip.

Perlina Lau as Rue

Rue acts as the guardian for a powerful enchanted sword.
She teams up with Faye during her quest through the Everywhen and appears to matter a lot, like in the narrative.

Will Kratos and Atreus appear?

So far, Sony hasn’t really officially confirmed anything, not in a clean way anyway.

But, if you zoom out, the whole thing seems kinda built around Faye’s need, her desire to guard…
Kratos, and also Atreus.

With that in mind, it would honestly feel odd if they were totally missing.

A lot of fans are already bracing for, or at least hoping for, things like
Flashbacks, story callbacks, and maybe even some sneaky surprise appearances.

At the same time, Santa Monica Studio looks like they’re trying to keep the spotlight squarely on Faye, no detours.

Expanding the God of War universe

One of the more exciting parts of God of War Laufey is what it could mean next.

The fact that it introduces things like Egyptian gods, brand new mythologies, and the Everywhen—
that kind of structure really suggests Sony is setting up a larger, longer-running God of War universe.

For years people have been guessing about, and kind of spinning theories involving
Egyptian mythology, Celtic mythology, Japanese mythology, and Hindu inspired mythic realms

and Laufey might be the first step in turning that speculation into something real.

Why fans are hyped

The reveal has basically landed with a wave of positive energy.

Players have been praising:

Faye as a playable character

Lots of fans have wanted to know more about her, for years, not just surface level.

Fresh combat mechanics

That agile combat approach feels distinct, different in a very noticeable way compared with Kratos.

Expanded mythology

The Everywhen feels like it opens up near endless storytelling routes, almost like a flexible doorway.

Strong visual presentation

The game still keeps that cinematic feel you’d expect from Santa Monica Studio, which is… pretty important.

Final Thoughts

God of War Laufey feels like one of those bold moves, in the franchise history, that actually makes you stop and stare. Instead of going straight ahead from where Kratos left off, Santa Monica Studio seems to be handing one of the series’ most mysterious figures her own larger, more solitary journey. Like, not just a side step either, more of a full-on epic.

With a brand-new protagonist, the Everywhen that sounds both ominous and intriguing, gods pulled from multiple mythologies and a combat style that stays fast on its feet. You also get powerful soul based abilities, plus a talented cast that makes everything feel a bit more alive.

Honestly, God of War Laufey is already starting to look like one of PlayStation’s most exciting upcoming exclusives. The release date is still unconfirmed, sure, but the reveal made one thing plain, The next chapter of God of War isn’t just “different” , it’s unlike anything fans have actually felt before.
